This video was made by my brother and long time collaborator Joe last year with our friend Ted Altman. Shot on a hill somewhere outside of Marfa, Texas. I spent Christmas Day 2008 with Rudi, this song is the story he told me over 2 High Life’s wrapped in aluminum foil and more than a few glasses of various whiskeys. Nicholas Monsour made this video a few years ago, shortly after I wrote the song. The prayer is borrowed from a Mexican votive candle called ‘the spellbreaker’ that somehow appeared on our back porch while living on Maplewood Ave in Chicago. Still love it. A more recent recording of Spellbreaker is on the new record ‘Pairs of Things and Other Stories’.
This is a new-ish song called ‘Keeping up with the Poets’ recorded at our show at Quencher’s in December 2010. Not Summer 2010, jeez.
